Total liquid ventilation is a radical change in respiratory support by replacing gas with a breathable perfluorocarbon liquid. As a respiratory support in acute lung injury, the total liquid ventilation allows recruitment of collapsed lung regions at lower pressure and ensures more homogeneous alveolar ventilation. The Inolivent research group develops liquid ventilators in order to translate this technology into neonatal intensive care units. (MDCC)
